I was reminiscing the other day about how my mom used to call my sisters and I on Saturdays to come “wash” our hair. Right before the wash we would take the sharpest comb possible and scratch away the dandruff.. Not knowing that it was causing hair to be ripped out of our heads! Can you relate?
So why is scratching your scalp such a terrible thing to do? Well, let me tell you why. First of all, you have to understand that your scalp is skin , just like the rest off your body, therefore just like our skin must be exfoliated to remove build up ( like the dandruff) our scalp must be exfoliated.
Secondly, scratching the scalp results in micro cuts that form on the scalp, those cut over time will turn into scars, and the scars can turn into hair loss.
Thirdly, the scalp needs to be detoxed just like the rest of our body. IT is actually very crucial that your scalp is detoxed regularly. Bacteria will accumulate on your scalp, which is one of the causes of dandruff. When bacteria is present on the scalp and its scratched this will cause the bacteria to spread. This results in your scalp needing to be detoxed.
The solution is not cookie cutter, or one size fits all, so I highly recommend you to see a Hair Loss Practitioner such as myself, or a Trichologist for scalp analysis, and recommended treatments. I hope this helps you to get a better understanding of scalp health, and remember to put down the comb and get a consultation from a professional.
Wishing you a healthy scalp!
